iSEDIMENT

The patient is being treated for a urinary tract infection. What are the crystals?

Answer to the iSEDIMENT quiz from 12/30/11 - Fatty Cast
A fatty cast viewed with polarizing filters and exhibiting anisotropism (double birefringence also referred to as a maltese cross configuration). Only those globules composed of cholesterol esters are anisotropic. Those composed of triglycerides do not polarize light, but stain with sudanophilic stains - x400 magnification.

    1. Bactrim does NOT contain sulfadiazine. Sulfamethoxazole crystals have not been well reported but the crystals above are sulfadiazine, not sulfamethoxazole, the sulfa drug in bactrim.
